2024-2025 Assigned Topics
Images submitted for the Assigned Category must be taken within a two-year time frame. Images must be taken on, or after, September 1, 2022 for the 2024-2025 season.
The topics for the Assigned Category for 2024-25 are listed below.
“Black and White”
- Black & White photography is a monochromatic visual medium that utilizes black, white, and shades of grey to depict scenes, emphasizing contrast, composition, and form. By eliminating colour, it distills the essence of subjects, focusing on texture and light. Black & White photography is a nuanced art form, showcasing the power of monochrome to convey narrative, mood, and the inherent beauty found within simplicity.
- Images must be Black and White. No sepia or colour-toning of images is allowed.
- Photographers may choose any subject matter as long as it is in B&W and adheres to our club policies regarding acceptable images.
“Juxtaposition”
- Juxtaposition refers to the deliberate placement of contrasting elements within a frame to create visual interest and convey a specific message. It involves positioning disparate subjects, colours, shapes or concepts side by side, emphasizing their differences or similarities. Juxtaposition in photography can evoke emotions, tell stories, or highlight societal contrasts. This technique encourages views to engage with the image on a deeper level, prompting them to explore the relationships and tensions between the elements captured in the photograph. The juxtaposition in the image can combine such contrasting elements as new/young vs old, natural vs man-made, lines vs. circles or two different emotions.
“Macro / Close-up”
- Macro or Close-up images use the camera to focus on a particular detail of a subject. Extreme close-ups are intimate and can be of living organisms or inanimate objects. You may choose to photograph the subject so it takes up most of the frame. Shape, texture and color may take on a different perspective in a macro or close-up image. Macro or close-up shots often are done with small objects such as insects or flowers, but many other possibilities are acceptable.
- A macro image is usually taken with a macro lens and typically captures an object at a 1:1 magnification, although higher magnifications of 1:2 or higher are possible.
- A close-up image usually isolates the subject from the environment and reveals the fine details of a subject without necessarily using the magnification associated with a macro image. Most lens are capable of taking a close-up photo.
- Images weak-in-category would include a large amount of environmental background. Images should focus on the detail of a subject rather than the background. Images with excessive background elements may be disqualified.
“Repetitions”
- A compelling photograph in the theme of repetitions often exhibits several key qualities. Firstly, it effectively captures a visually interesting pattern or repeated element, creating a sense of rhythm within the frame. The repetition should be well-balanced, avoiding monotony. Strong composition and framing play a crucial role, guiding the viewer’s eye through the repeated elements. Additionally, variations within the repetitions, or clever juxtapositions, can add depth and intrigue.
- Random patterns will be considered as weak in category. There must be a clear repetition of elements.
“Creative”
- Creative photography extends traditional boundaries by using innovative techniques in composition and post-processing to evoke emotions and tell compelling stories. From surreal landscapes to abstract close-ups, creative photography pushes the boundaries of visual expression Images should explore unique viewpoints and innovative techniques to express creative ideas in photography.
- Creative images should not look like they are straight out of camera; rather they will often include modifications such as compositing, multiple exposures or other creative filtering effects.
- All components of the final image must be created by the maker. Stock images, backgrounds or textures are not allowed. Artificial intelligence processing is not acceptable.
Please note: the order of the topics is subject to change. The order will be finalized prior to the start of the season in September 2024.
