meeting – Print 1 Presentation & Sandra Herber (Abandoned things)

Sandra Herber is an award-winning amateur photographer. She works as a librarian in Toronto but spends most of her free time (and all of her disposable income) photographing in Canada and around the world. Sandra’s love of photography started in her teens when her mother gave her an old Pentax Spotmatic and her parents allowed her to set up a darkroom in the basement where she developed black and white film and made a lot of pretty terrible prints. She has been fascinated by abandoned spaces since walking into an old, empty factory in what is now Liberty Village in 2009. Once the interest was ignited, she photographed abandoned office buildings, schools, churches and theatres in Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland. Since then she has explored abandonment through multiple trips to the Prairies since 2013 to photograph old wooden grain elevators, homesteads and schools. She has been working on a project photographing remote Mayan ruins not open to the public since 2014.

In this presentation, Sandra will talk about the development of her interest in abandonment and the ways she has explored it in multiple projects since 2009. She will also give practical advice on planning and scouting trips and photographing abandoned structures in ways that are sympathetic to their environments (in infrared, particularly).
