How to use Portable Flash

 

Participants will rotate through 5 stations, each demonstrating some aspect of flash photography.
 
Station 1   Ron Goodlin
Demonstrating using flash on camera, with and without diffusion. discuss red eye, ttl and manual modes.

1. photo subject in front of screen using bare flash to demonstrate harsh light and look at the shadow created on the background
2. photo subject in front of screen using flash with the built in reflector card, compare
3. photo subject in front of screen using Gary Fong diffuser, compare
4. photo subject in front of screen using diffusion soft box, compare.
 
Station 2.  Don Tod
Demonstrating the use of off camera flash to create more dynamic lighting and to eliminate red eye
Photo of subject standing in front of bristol board background, using camera with flash that is tethered to the hot shoe with cord or cordless, The flash can be hand held, bracketed or on a light stand off to the side of the film plane.
1. photo of subject with flash on camera hot shoe to demonstrate harsh light and red eye
2. photo of the subject with the flash off camera to demonstrate shadowing and loss of red eye
3. photo of the subject with the flash off camera but now using a diffuser to soften the light.  Compare photos.
 
Station 3.  David McLagan
Portrait Photography using single and multiple flash units.

Station 4.  Richard Gouviea
Demonstrating the use of bounce flash for use in taking candid photos during event photography
off camera flash on light stand
1. demonstrate the use of bounce flash with flash on camera aimed at ceiling’
2. demonstrate the use of bounce flash with flash on camera aimed at a wall
3. demonstrate the use of bounce flash with the flash on a light stand aimed at ceiling
4. demonstrate the use of bounce flash with the flash on a light stand aimed at a wall.
compare photos.
 
Station 5. Atul Asthana
Demonstrating the use of fill flash with a simulation of outdoor backlighting
position the subject in front of a bright background, 
1. meter for exposure to the face of the subject (the background will be blown out)
2. meter for an exposure for the background  (the face will be very dark)
3. now using fill flash, expose for the background and create light for the face with the fill flash….(you will use this on manual mode and dial in a percentage to give you the correct face exposure)
4. talk about the use of a better beamer for use of fill flash when doing wildlife photography.
