Bob did a brief ‘show & tell’ featuring a pre-moistened, disposable cloth for cleaning any type of glass, including lenses with anti-reflective, multi-layer coatings.
- The brand name is ZEISS, and one gets 90 individually packaged cloths in a package.
- 1 or 2 of these in your emergency kit in your camera bag is probably an excellent idea.
- Cost is very cheap: $2 for a box of 90 at Dollarama.
However, the cost and source give one to pause as to the authenticity of the brand and its actual quality, so I would stress that these are for emergency use only, when a simple brushing and blowing on the surface of a lens won’t remove something (e.g. an oily smudge).
I have used them without any noticeable problem, but I know that the common wisdom is that cleaning lens surfaces should be kept to a minimum and when possible limited to some means that doesn’t involve actually rubbing the surface. Hence, use these cloths sparingly and with some caution.
